To measure the rate of reaction we either need to measure the change in one of the reactants or products of the reaction over time. Favourite methods for this involve measuring the change in a colour, measuring the volume of a gas produced or a change in temperature. The method used needs to be carefully chosen for any given reaction as many do not change colour or release a gas!
