If there is a change in sign from f(a) to f(b), this implies there exists an odd number of points k1, k2, k3 ... kn (where n > 0 and n is odd) for which a < K < b, and f(K) = 0, and thus there exists an odd number of roots of f(x), between a and b, not including a and b.
