Divide the numerator and the denominator by the same number.

Let's break it down with an example: Let's say we want to simplify the fraction 6/8.

  1. Find a common factor: Think of what number divides evenly into both 6 and 8. Both 6 and 8 are divisible by 2.

  2. Divide both parts: Divide the numerator (6) by 2, which gives you 3. Divide the denominator (8) by 2, which gives you 4.

  3. Write the new fraction: The simplified fraction is 3/4. So, 6/8 = 3/4.

find the greatest common factor (GCF) of the numerator and denominator, then divide both by that GCF to get the simplest form

To simplify a fraction, you need to identify the highest common factor that can be divided into both parts of the fraction

Looking at both of the numbers find the highest common factor and divide both numbers by the factor. This should result in an answer where the fraction is in its simplest form!

Either use the highest common factor (HCF) of both numerator and denominator to simplify your fraction to its simplest form or use any other lower factor of both numerator and denominator to simplify your fractions step by step until your fraction is in its lowest form.

Find a SINGLE number which will divide into the top number of the fraction (numerator) and the bottom number of the fraction. The SINGLE number must NOT change when you do the divisions. Always check to see if the numerator and denominator can be divided again by another number. It would be useful to check your knowledge of factors and multiples before trying to simplify a fraction. This is important.
