Hi Felicity, there are many ways to go about this question. Personally, what helped me understand all the methods to completing this question is through this: First, take 550 and break it into 100 parts by dividing it by 100, which gives you 1% of 550. Then, since you want 120 parts or 120% of 550, you multiply your previous answer by 120.
It can be written out like this: 120% of 550 = 550/100 x 120
= 5.5 x 120
= 660
Hope this was helpful!
This is a basic % calculation math, and the first thing to not here is % means a 100 of whatever you have. So it can be solved as dividing 550 by a 100, then multiplying it by 120. Or by dividing 120 by a 100, then multiplying it by 550. The result gotten from any of the two methods would be same = 660.
First of all we want to find what 10% of 550 is. We do this by dividing 550 by 10. 550/10=55
Then because 120/10= 12 we know that 12* 10% of 550 = 120% of 550
12*55=660
120% of 550 is 660
Turn the percentage number into a decimal by dividing it by a hundred, and then multiply that by the number. So 120 divided by 100 turns into 1.2, and 1.2 times 550 is 660.
100% = 550, 20% = 110. Therefore, 550 + 110 = 660
The best way figure out a problem like this is to break it down step by step. Lets begin by working out what 10% of 550 is. So in order to do that we can divide 550 by 10 which is 55. Once we have this we need to figure out how to get to 120%. So what we can do is check how do we get from 10 -> 120. We multiply by 12! So now you do the same thing to 55, we multiply by 12. So the answer would be (55x12) = 660
I would multiply 550 by 1.2 (I have moved the decimal place of 120 over two places to the left). The answer is 660.

If this is a calculator question the easiest hack to find any percentage of anything on a calculator is to locate the % button, on my calculator its found by pressing 'shift' then 'ans' , yours may be different but it will be in yellow above one of the buttons meaning you will need to press shift before it.
In maths whenever you see the word 'of' you need to multiply.
So 120% of 550 means 120% x 550
using my calculator i would type :
120 'shift' 'ans' x 550 =
then my answer would be 660

I would then look to find the 10% and double it to get the other part. 10% of 550 is 55. 55x2 is 110. So we take that and add it to the number given for our answer 550 + 110 = 660

Hello! Great question! Well 100% is 550! So then we have to add another 20%!
550 divided by 100 is 5.5! Multiply that by 20 is 110. Add 110 to 550 and you get 660!
Hope that helps!
