Firstly, we need to both fractions to have the same denominator (bottom number). As 3 is factor of 9, we can convert thirds to ninths by performing the same operation to the bottom and the top numbers:

1 3

3 multiply by 3 9

Now we can complete the calculation

3 3/9 - 2 3/9 = (3 - 2) + (3/9 - 3/9) = 1
